Once again the LAGS successfully concluded the year by hosting its annual banquet at Taix French Restaurant on Sunset Boulevard. Despite the drizzle, nearly seventy geographers, travel enthusiasts, and students attended the event. Appetizing dishes complemented Taix’s warm ambiance. Prize books, DVDs, theater tickets, gift baskets, and foreign souvenirs prompted generous raffle donations, raising more than $400 for the scholarship funds. Although pressed for time, featured speaker Professor Bill Selby delivered an expressive and thought-provoking lecture entitled “California: 21st Century Landscape Evolution”. Based on the latest edition of his textbook, Selby raised questions concerning California’s uncertain future. Impending crises concerned with suburban growth, water, middle class stability, energy, natural hazards, population and demographics, budget, education, and transportation were discussed and theoretically solved. With this, Professor Selby ended his dynamic lecture, sending members back to all corners of Southern California – Downtown LA, Orange County, the Valley, and Beach Cities.
Everybody had a good time, for which a special thanks needs to go to Treasurer Douglas Goode and Councilor Mary Prichard for their hard work and organization.
