"Effect of Topography on Southern California Severe Weather"
Jeff Brown

Graduate Student

California State University, Los Angeles

ABSTRACT:
The effect of the local terrain in southern California can have a profound effect on the distribution and development of severe weather in the southern portion of the state. Several studies have noted that severe local storms generated by the inland terrain are associated with certain weather types during the winter and spring seasons. Severe local storms can also occur during the late summer as monsoonal moisture moves into the region. Here topography can play a role on where these severe storms can occur. The severe local storms synoptic patterns are similar to those found in other portions of the country. The offshore islands can also play a role in generating severe weather events that move into the coastal and inland valley areas.
