LAGS - Scholarships

The Los Angeles Geographical Society awards Scholarships each year to students who are outstanding Geography majors at local colleges and universities. Awards are given to both Community College students and Upper Division students at Universities. The purpose of these scholarships is to encourage talented students to continue their training and studies in Geography and to foster interest in Geography.

The two types of Scholarships memorialize past individuals who volunteered extensive exemplary service to the Los Angeles Geographical Society and after whom the two major Scholarship funds remain formally named. Community College students have been awarded Scholarships in memory of the late Tom McKnight and Joan Clemons, past Professors of Geography respectively at UCLA and Los Angeles Valley College and major donors to Scholarships, which continues through their estate. Upper Division students at Universities have been awarded Scholarships in memory of the late Richard Logan, who was a Professor of Geography at UCLA and led numerous local field trips for the Los Angeles Geographical Society.

A limited number of merit-based $500 Scholarships are awarded to Geography majors at Community Colleges and in Upper Division at Universities south of the 36th parallel in California. As merit-based Scholarships, financial need is NOT a consideration.

APPLICATION DEADLINE is the First Friday of April.

Minimum Qualification Criteria:

• Community College students: 3.0 Overall GPA + 3.5 Geography GPA; Must have completed 2 Geography courses.

• Upper Division students: 3.0 Overall GPA + 3.5 Geography GPA;

Must have completed 5 Upper Division Geography courses.

Additional subjective criteria may be considered by the Scholarship Criteria for awarding student Scholarships. Interested students must mail the following documents:

- Completed applications (please use the appropriate form)

- Current official transcripts

- One faculty letter of recommendation

- A typed 8½ x 11 page personal statement

All correspondence must be received by the close of business on the first Friday of April each year. Award recipients are notified by the end of April and are presented with their awards at the regular meeting in May.
